# Select

> Choose one or more values from a popup list of options.

export const StoryEmbed = ({storyId, title, height = 120}) => <>
    <Tabs>
      <Tab title="Light">
        <iframe title={`${title} (light)`} src={`https://storybook.twenty.com/iframe.html?id=${storyId}&viewMode=story&globals=colorScheme:light`} width="100%" height={height} loading="lazy" allow="clipboard-write" style={{

Use `Select` for a form value chosen from a list. [Dropdown](/ui/components/navigation/dropdown) remains the main higher-level API for menus, pickers, panels, and pages that combine those workflows.

<StoryEmbed storyId="ui-input-select--display" title="Select example" height={240} />

## Usage

### Uncontrolled state

Use `defaultValue` to set the initial priority. The select owns subsequent selection changes.

```tsx theme={null}
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'low', label: 'Low' },
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
export const PrioritySelect = () => (
  <Select.Root name="priority" defaultValue="normal" items={PRIORITIES}>
    <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
      <Select.Value placeholder="Choose a priority" />
      <Select.Icon />
    </Select.Trigger>
    <Select.Portal>
      <Select.Positioner
        align="start"
        sideOffset={8}
        alignItemWithTrigger={false}
      >
        <Select.Popup>
          {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
            <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
              <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
              <Select.ItemIndicator />
            </Select.Item>
          ))}
        </Select.Popup>
      </Select.Positioner>
    </Select.Portal>
  </Select.Root>
);
```

Supply `items` on `Root` so `Value` renders the selected item's label; without it, the trigger shows the raw value. The selected value can be `null` when nothing is selected.

## Anatomy

Compose the public parts inside `Select.Root`. `Trigger` and `Item` render only their children. Add `Icon`, `ItemText`, and `ItemIndicator` explicitly when you want the default chevron, label, and checkmark.

```text theme={null}
Select.Root
├── Select.Label
├── Select.Trigger
│   ├── Select.Value
│   └── Select.Icon
└── Select.Portal
    ├── Select.Backdrop
    └── Select.Positioner
        └── Select.Popup
            ├── Select.Arrow
            ├── Select.ScrollUpArrow
            ├── Select.List
            │   ├── Select.Group
            │   │   ├── Select.GroupLabel
            │   │   └── Select.Item
            │   │       ├── Select.ItemText
            │   │       └── Select.ItemIndicator
            │   └── Select.Separator
            └── Select.ScrollDownArrow
```

| Part | Purpose |
| - | - |
| `Root` | Owns selection, open state, generic values, and native form integration. |
| `Label` | Associates a visible label with the trigger. |
| `Trigger` | Opens the list and contains the displayed value. |
| `Value` | Renders the selected label or a placeholder. |
| `Icon` | Renders a default chevron or custom children in the trigger. |
| `Portal` | Moves popup content to the theme's portal container or an explicit container. |
| `Backdrop` | Provides an optional backdrop while the popup is open. |
| `Positioner` | Owns anchor geometry, placement, offsets, and collision behavior. |
| `Popup` | Renders the popup surface without adding a portal or positioner. |
| `List` | Provides a separate scrolling container for options. |
| `Item` | Provides selection behavior for one option. |
| `ItemText` | Identifies the option label used for typeahead and selected-value alignment. |
| `ItemIndicator` | Renders the selected option's default checkmark or custom children. |
| `Arrow` | Positions an optional arrow against the popup anchor. |
| `ScrollUpArrow`, `ScrollDownArrow` | Scroll a long list when hovered. |
| `Group`, `GroupLabel` | Group related options under a label. |
| `Separator` | Separates groups visually. |

`Portal`, `List`, `Backdrop`, arrows, and indicators are optional. Use `Positioner` around `Popup` for positioning, including when you render the popup inline without a portal.

## Controlled state

Pass `value` and update it with `onValueChange` to own the same priority in React state. The callback receives the next value and event details.

```tsx theme={null}
import { useState } from 'react';
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'low', label: 'Low' },
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
export const PrioritySelect = () => {
  const [priority, setPriority] = useState<string | null>('normal');
  return (
    <Select.Root
      name="priority"
      value={priority}
      onValueChange={setPriority}
      items={PRIORITIES}
    >
      <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
        <Select.Value placeholder="Choose a priority" />
        <Select.Icon />
      </Select.Trigger>
      <Select.Portal>
        <Select.Positioner
          align="start"
          sideOffset={8}
          alignItemWithTrigger={false}
        >
          <Select.Popup>
            {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
              <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                <Select.ItemIndicator />
              </Select.Item>
            ))}
          </Select.Popup>
        </Select.Positioner>
      </Select.Portal>
    </Select.Root>
  );
};
```

## Multiple selection

```tsx theme={null}
import { useState } from 'react';
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const LANGUAGES = [
  { value: 'en', label: 'English' },
  { value: 'fr', label: 'French' },
  { value: 'es', label: 'Spanish' },
];
export const LanguageSelect = () => {
  const [languages, setLanguages] = useState<string[]>(['en']);
  return (
    <Select.Root
      multiple
      value={languages}
      onValueChange={setLanguages}
      items={LANGUAGES}
    >
      <Select.Trigger aria-label="Languages">
        <Select.Value placeholder="Choose languages" />
        <Select.Icon />
      </Select.Trigger>
      <Select.Portal>
        <Select.Positioner
          align="start"
          sideOffset={8}
          alignItemWithTrigger={false}
        >
          <Select.Popup>
            {LANGUAGES.map(({ value, label }) => (
              <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                <Select.ItemIndicator />
              </Select.Item>
            ))}
          </Select.Popup>
        </Select.Positioner>
      </Select.Portal>
    </Select.Root>
  );
};
```

With `multiple`, the value is an array. Use `defaultValue={['en']}` instead of `value` and `onValueChange` for an uncontrolled multiple selection. The generic root types represent the option value and whether multiple selection is enabled.

## Open state

Selection and popup visibility are independent. The examples above leave popup visibility uncontrolled. Selecting a single value closes the popup; multiple selection keeps it open. Use `defaultOpen` to set its initial visibility; it defaults to `false`.

Pass `open` and update it with `onOpenChange` to control visibility. This example controls the popup while leaving the selected priority uncontrolled.

```tsx theme={null}
import { useState } from 'react';
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'low', label: 'Low' },
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
export const PrioritySelect = () => {
  const [open, setOpen] = useState(false);
  return (
    <Select.Root
      name="priority"
      defaultValue="normal"
      items={PRIORITIES}
      open={open}
      onOpenChange={setOpen}
    >
      <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
        <Select.Value placeholder="Choose a priority" />
        <Select.Icon />
      </Select.Trigger>
      <Select.Portal>
        <Select.Positioner
          align="start"
          sideOffset={8}
          alignItemWithTrigger={false}
        >
          <Select.Popup>
            {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
              <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                <Select.ItemIndicator />
              </Select.Item>
            ))}
          </Select.Popup>
        </Select.Positioner>
      </Select.Portal>
    </Select.Root>
  );
};
```

## Compose with a field

Wrap the select in `Field.Root` to associate its trigger with a visible label and helper text. The field handles labeling and validation; the select keeps its own selection and popup state.

```tsx theme={null}
import { Field, Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'low', label: 'Low' },
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
export const PriorityField = () => (
  <Field.Root name="priority">
    <Field.Label>Priority</Field.Label>
    <Select.Root name="priority" defaultValue="normal" items={PRIORITIES}>
      <Select.Trigger>
        <Select.Value />
        <Select.Icon />
      </Select.Trigger>
      <Select.Portal>
        <Select.Positioner
          align="start"
          sideOffset={8}
          alignItemWithTrigger={false}
        >
          <Select.Popup>
            {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
              <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                <Select.ItemIndicator />
              </Select.Item>
            ))}
          </Select.Popup>
        </Select.Positioner>
      </Select.Portal>
    </Select.Root>
    <Field.Description>
      Choose how soon this record needs attention.
    </Field.Description>
  </Field.Root>
);
```

## Item composition

Compose arbitrary content inside `Item`. Put the searchable label in `ItemText`; additional content does not become its typeahead label. Provide children to `Icon` or `ItemIndicator` to replace their default icons, or omit those parts altogether.

```tsx theme={null}
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
export const PrioritySelect = () => (
  <Select.Root defaultValue="high" items={{ high: 'High' }}>
    <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
      <Select.Value />
      <Select.Icon />
    </Select.Trigger>
    <Select.Portal>
      <Select.Positioner
        align="start"
        sideOffset={8}
        alignItemWithTrigger={false}
      >
        <Select.Popup>
          <Select.Item value="high">
            <Select.ItemText>High</Select.ItemText>
            <span>Needs attention today</span>
            <Select.ItemIndicator />
          </Select.Item>
        </Select.Popup>
      </Select.Positioner>
    </Select.Portal>
  </Select.Root>
);
```

All parts that render elements accept native attributes, refs, and Base UI's `render`, `className`, and `style` composition APIs. For example, use `render={<Button />}` on `Trigger` to compose it with a Twenty UI button. For a non-button render element, also set `nativeButton={false}`.

## Placement

Set `size="sm"` or `size="md"` on `Trigger`. Placement belongs on `Positioner`; portal destination belongs on `Portal`.

`Positioner` preserves Base UI's defaults: `side="bottom"`, `align="center"`, `sideOffset={0}`, and `alignItemWithTrigger={true}`. Selected-item alignment applies to pointer input when there is enough space. Set `alignItemWithTrigger={false}` to use anchored positioning consistently. The examples above choose `align="start"` and `sideOffset={8}` explicitly.

```tsx theme={null}
import { useRef, useState } from 'react';
import { Button, Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'low', label: 'Low' },
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
export const PositionedPrioritySelect = () => {
  const anchorRef = useRef<HTMLButtonElement>(null);
  const boundaryRef = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null);
  const [portalContainer, setPortalContainer] = useState<HTMLDivElement | null>(
    null,
  );
  return (
    <div ref={boundaryRef}>
      <Button ref={anchorRef}>Position anchor</Button>
      <Select.Root defaultValue="normal" items={PRIORITIES}>
        <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
          <Select.Value />
          <Select.Icon />
        </Select.Trigger>
        <Select.Portal container={portalContainer}>
          <Select.Positioner
            anchor={anchorRef}
            positionMethod="fixed"
            side="inline-end"
            align="start"
            alignItemWithTrigger={false}
            sideOffset={({ anchor }) => anchor.width / 4}
            alignOffset={4}
            collisionBoundary={boundaryRef.current ?? undefined}
            collisionPadding={12}
            collisionAvoidance={{ side: 'flip', align: 'shift' }}
            sticky
          >
            <Select.Popup>
              <Select.Arrow />
              <Select.List>
                {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
                  <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                    <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                    <Select.ItemIndicator />
                  </Select.Item>
                ))}
              </Select.List>
            </Select.Popup>
          </Select.Positioner>
        </Select.Portal>
      </Select.Root>
      <div ref={setPortalContainer} />
    </div>
  );
};
```

`Positioner` also supports virtual anchors, offset functions, `arrowPadding`, and `disableAnchorTracking`. `Portal` uses the [theme's portal container](/ui/theming#scope-an-override) unless you provide `container`. An explicit `container={null}` waits until that container is available.

## Native forms and callback details

Set `name` on `Root` to include the selected value in `FormData`. Multiple selection submits one entry per selected value. `form` associates the hidden input with an external form, and `inputRef` gives access to that input. `required`, `disabled`, and `autoComplete` retain Base UI's native form behavior.

`onValueChange` and `onOpenChange` receive the next state and upstream event details, including `reason`, the native `event`, `cancel()`, and `allowPropagation()`. Calling `cancel()` prevents the corresponding internal state change. Controlled roots still require you to update `value` or `open`.

```tsx theme={null}
import { useState } from 'react';
import { Select } from 'twenty-ui/primitives/input';
const PRIORITIES = [
  { value: 'normal', label: 'Normal' },
  { value: 'high', label: 'High' },
];
type PrioritySelectProps = { canSetHighPriority: boolean };
export const PrioritySelect = ({ canSetHighPriority }: PrioritySelectProps) => {
  const [priority, setPriority] = useState<string | null>('normal');
  return (
    <Select.Root
      items={PRIORITIES}
      value={priority}
      onValueChange={(nextPriority, details) => {
        if (nextPriority === 'high' && !canSetHighPriority) {
          details.cancel();
          return;
        }
        setPriority(nextPriority);
      }}
    >
      <Select.Trigger aria-label="Priority">
        <Select.Value />
        <Select.Icon />
      </Select.Trigger>
      <Select.Portal>
        <Select.Positioner
          align="start"
          sideOffset={8}
          alignItemWithTrigger={false}
        >
          <Select.Popup>
            {PRIORITIES.map(({ value, label }) => (
              <Select.Item key={value} value={value}>
                <Select.ItemText>{label}</Select.ItemText>
                <Select.ItemIndicator />
              </Select.Item>
            ))}
          </Select.Popup>
        </Select.Positioner>
      </Select.Portal>
    </Select.Root>
  );
};
```

The generic root types represent the option value and whether multiple selection is enabled. Object values support `itemToStringLabel`, `itemToStringValue`, and `isItemEqualToValue`. Use `null` for an empty single selection and an empty array for an empty multiple selection.

## Keyboard

Keyboard users can open the list from the trigger, navigate options with arrow keys, and type to find an option. Home and End jump to the first and last options. Enter selects an option; Escape dismisses the popup and restores trigger focus. Multiple selection keeps the popup open while options are toggled.

Label the trigger with `Select.Label`, an accessible name, or [Field](/ui/primitives/input/field). A placeholder alone does not name the control.

## Props

The reference is generated from the public component types. Native attributes, including accessible names and event handlers, are also accepted on parts that render elements.
